Tesla Motors

the Tesla Roadster has a 200 to 250 mile range, weighs about 2500 lbs, goes 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, and tops out at 130+ mph.

Feb. 21 2007: Washington Post/Reuters:
Already 330 celebrities, including George Clooney, have signed up to buy the Roadster

August 8 2007: LOS ANGELES (Reuters)
The Silicon Valley-based Tesla has pre-sold 570 cars to the likes of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, for his wife Maria Shriver, and to actor George Clooney. The company will make 800 to 1,000 2008 model year cars.

Apart from the occasional concept car, it was not until 1996 that a major manufacturer, GM, started producing an electric car in the US, the EV1.

They and other manufacturers were forced to come up with non-polluting electric vehicles because of a Californian law to help reduce smog.

Wally Rippel, research engineer on the EV1, said: "The EV1 was a leap of faith. We were doing something very new, something that was in many ways scary.

"There were some at GM who were very enthused and some who were dubious."

But when the law was challenged [by Bush and his executive branch oil cartel] and then watered down, GM demanded the leased vehicles be returned. Almost all of them were crushed.

AC Propulsion in San Dimas, Calif. built the LiIon tzero. 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds and range at 250 to 300 miles with price "somewhere between a Porsche and a Ferrari".
Tzero: energy efficient electric vehicle
racing against a Porche in the rain (only 2 ever built)

The tzero was built by Al Cocconi, one of the original engineers of the prototype for GM's EV-1 His tzero only got 60 mi on a charge and 0-60 in 4.1 sec's. till Martin Eberhard (before creating Tesla Motors) offered a $150,000 investment to switch the lead-acid batteries out for lithium ion. The lighter batteries worked. The souped-up tzero accelerated from 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds and had a range of more than 300 miles. Eberhard had found his supercar. He persuaded AC Propulsion to build him one and tried to convince Cocconi that he should put the tzero into production. But Cocconi had no interest in building a car company. - So, Eberhard continued on his path that led to Tesla Motors.

Tesla's electric car

a 1931 Pierce Arrow

Tesla's electric car: 1931 Pierce Arrow

In 1931, under the financing of Pierce-Arrow and George Westinghouse, a 1931 Pierce-Arrow was selected to be tested at the factory grounds in Buffalo, N.Y. The standard internal combustion engine was removed and an 80hp 1800 rpm AC electric motor installed to the clutch and transmission. The A.C. motor measured 40 inches long and 30 inches in diameter.

Nikola Tesla arrived from New York City and inspected the Pierce-Arrow. He then went to a local radio store and purchased a handful of tubes (12), wires and assorted resistors. A box measuring 24 inches long, 12 inches wide and 6 inches high was assembled housing the circuit. A heavy antenna approximately 1.8 meters long, came out of the box. The box was placed on the front seat and had its wires connected to the air-cooled, brushless motor. Two rods 1/4" in diameter stuck out of the box about 3" in length. (later in the week, the box was installed in the dashboard)

Mr. Tesla got into the driver's seat, pushed the two rods in and stated, " We now have power". He put the car into gear and it moved forward! This vehicle, powered by the 80hp A.C. motor, was driven to speeds of 90 M.P.H. and performed better than any internal combustion engine of its day. One week was spent testing the vehicle. Several newspapers in Buffalo, N.Y. reported this test. When asked where the power came from, Tesla replied, "From the ethers all around us".

Radiant (Dark) Energy: Unraveling Tesla's Greatest Secret

TESLA: Man Out of Time

by Margaret Cheney

"there had been no truly successful AC motor until Tesla invented his - an induction motor that was the heart of a new system and a quantum jump ahead of the times" pg. 23

He did not just invent one simple AC motor. He "conceived of such practical alternating-current motors as polyphase induction, split-phase induction, and polyphase synchronous, as well as the whole polyphase and single-phase motor system ... indeed, "practically all electricity in the world, in time, would be generated, transmitted, distributed, and turned into mechanical power by means of the Tesla Polyphase System." pg. 24

"Because his motors required 60 cycle AC, that became the standard in the U.S. pg.41

He demonstrated "a motor that ran on only one wire, the return circuit occurring wirelessly through space. ... he spoke of the possibility of running motors without any wires at all." pg. 54

He built "high powered switches and spark gap switches" of kinds that even today "the knowledge has been lost; we don't know how he did it." pg. 282

"Falmboyant, eccentric, almost supernaturally gifted ... perhaps the greatest inventor the world has ever known ...He was a trailblazer who created astonishing, world-transforming devices, often without theoretical precedent." -- outside back cover

A very different magnet motor
www.angelfire.com/

A motor run solely by magnets was originally suggested by Nikola Tesla in 1905.

" Engineers of Hitachi Magnetics Corp. of California have stated that a motor run solely by magnets is feasible and logical but the politics of the matter make it impossible for them to pursue developing a magnet motor or any device that would compete with the energy cartels.

Batteries

Lithium-ion: Technical challenges of Li-ion batteries include difficult-to-produce membranes, and critical thermal management to prevent overheating, and attendant high cost. However, Li-ion batteries are showing signs of becoming cost competitive, especially in light of Sony's successful experience manufacturing the batteries for consumer electronics.

A123 Systems, founded in 2001, has developed new Li-Ion technology that has twice the energy density of previous Li-Ion technology and is safer.

"In their charged state, lithium-ion batteries are intrinsically unstable," says Bart Riley, the CTO of A123 Systems. "If they get damaged, or there's a manufacturing defect, as was the case with the Sony batteries last year, there can be a spontaneous internal short, and you've got an explosion or fire," A123 has, over the past five years developed a lithium-ion battery system that has “unprecedented safety, power, and life.”

Sodium-nickel chloride: sodium-nickel-chloride batteries are safe, have no fire danger, have high energy and power density, are capable of several thousand deep-cycle charges, can be fast charged, and have a stable chemistry. BMW claims to have run cars for 50,000 km on such batteries with no failures, and believes the batteries will be competitive even with Li-ion batteries in the future.
