Wednesday, Jan. 6th: Trump’s Insurrection-Attack on Washington DC; Congress

George W. Bush: “I am appalled by the reckless behavior of some political leaders since the election and by the lack of respect shown today for our institutions, our traditions, and our law enforcement,” Bush said in a statement. “The violent assault on the Capitol – and disruption of a Constitutionally-mandated meeting of Congress – was undertaken by people whose passions have been inflamed by falsehoods and false hopes.”
President Trump delivered a speech to supporters in the nation’s capital earlier in the day, doubling down on unproven claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged against him.
Sean Hannity, FOX, strongly condemned Wednesday’s violence on Capitol Hill, calling for those responsible to be “arrested and prosecuted.”
Tucker Carlson, FOX: “a political protest got out of hand after the president recklessly encouraged it. That is in fact what happened,”
Karl Rove: an attempt to stop the actions of a constitutionally required session of the United States Congress is beyond the pale.”

Repub. Liz Cheney slams Trump for ‘intolerable’ conduct, says president ‘incited the mob’- – –
“What is important is to recognize we just had a violent mob assault the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to prevent us from carrying out our constitutional duty,” Cheney told “Special Report” host Bret Baier.
“There is no question that the president formed the mob. The president incited the mob, the president addressed the mob. This is what America is not.”

Karl Rove: Latest Trump statement ‘too little, too late’

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Wednesday called for the prosecution of the rioters who stormed the Capitol building:
“Those who made this attack on our government need to be identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Graham tweeted. “Their actions are repugnant to democracy.”
the South Carolina senator said he “could not agree more” with Biden’s Wednesday comments, when the president-elect called the riot an “insurrection.”

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) told “CBS This Morning” that he would consider whatever the House sends to the Senate.

“If they come together and have a process, I will definitely consider whatever articles they might move, because as I told you I believe the president has disregarded his oath of office,” Sasse said.

“He swore an oath to the American people to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. He acted against that,” he added. “What he did was wicked.”

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) told the Anchorage Daily News Friday that Trump should resign.
“I want him to resign. I want him out. He has caused enough damage,” she said.

Murkowski said Trump only wants to stay in office “for the title” and has largely given up on governing.

“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday placed blame squarely on President Donald Trump for the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol, saying he had “provoked” the violent mob of the president’s supporters. Threatened the lives of Pence, and McConnell in additions to everyone else.”
Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Friday circulated to colleagues a memo outlining the procedure for holding another trial for President Trump if the House impeaches him for a second time in just over a year.

there is roiling anger at Trump among Republicans and the riot has made it easier for many in the party to call for extreme measures over what they view as a threat to public safety.

One former White House official, ex-communications director Alyssa Farah, told CNN on Friday that Trump should “seriously consider” resigning from office and acknowledged that he lied to the American public about the election.

But in a reminder of his unpredictability, Trump issued a tweet on Friday morning that was far more encouraging of his backers and did not give any indication the president was prepared to cede the stage.

“He’s either been golfing or he’s been inside the Oval Office fuming and throwing every single person who has been loyal and faithful to him under the bus,
“I want him to resign. I want him out. He has caused enough damage,” the Alaska senator told Anchorage Daily News.
if the Republican Party has become nothing more than the party of Trump, I sincerely question whether this is the party for me,” she said.”

2016:
Tony Schwartz, Trump’s ghostwriter: “If Donald Trump is elected president, I fear for the future of civilization.” … “people voting for Trump may think he cares about them, but they would find out he only cares about himself.”

2021:
Trump’s rally was not meant to be peaceful but “Wild” –
Mr Trump tweeted in December. “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!”

“At 1 p.m., we will march to the Capitol building and call on Congress to stop the steal,”

Trump took the rally stage and exhorted this volatile mix of supporters repeatedly to “fight” – using the word more than 20 times – and “not take it any longer.” He ridiculed “weak” and “pathetic” Republicans and told the crowd they must “be strong” before dispatching the “patriots” on a march to the Capitol.
Trump told the crowd: “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol” and adding: “You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.” … Rudy Giuliani’s words: ‘exercise combat justice,’
House aides say Trump was “delighted” as Capitol was stormed.
…he[Trump] wanted there to be chaos,” Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) said, during an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt Friday morning.
Sasse continued. “As this was unfolding on television, Donald Trump was walking around the White House confused about why other people on his team weren’t as excited as he was as you had rioters pushing against Capitol Police trying to get into the building.”
Sasse added: “He was delighted.”

Trump was “delighted” on the 6th, the 20th to be worse!: “we will storm the government buildings, kill cops, kill security guards, kill federal employees and agents, and demand a recount.” … https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/right-wing-extremists-vow-return-washington-joe-biden-s-inauguration-n1253546

week after the 6th:
no wonder: the “internal polling showing Trump’s support cratering among GOP voters – especially since last week when he incited a violent mob of his supporters to riot in the Capitol leading to the deaths of five people

Christopher Krebs, a cyber-security chief for the Trump administration, called the election the most secure in the nation’s history shortly after the vote. Trump fired him.

Trump, whose mentor was the mob lawyer Roy Cohn, has no regard for the law beyond its use as a weapon to be deployed by those ruthless and wealthy enough to wield it in relentless self-interest.

While it’s all very amusing to watch Trump lose over and over again, the threat that he and his Republican allies pose to the integrity of our democracy should not be understated. Over a hundred Republican lawmakers have signed a brief in support of Texas’ lawsuit, all of them arguing that the election that gave them their seats in the first place is fraudulent. If it wasn’t clear before, the Republican Party is now openly opposed to American democracy and are actively working to overthrow it.
